The instructors at Six String Place have decades of instructional and performance experience in all of the popular musical genres as well as classical music. We have instructors for the fretted instruments (guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin), drums and percussion, piano and vocals.
Don Warren is the owner and founder of Six String Place. Don has expertise in a variety of musical genres including rock, blues, folk and country. Don teaches multiple instruments including guitar, slide guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin and ukulele. Sean Barrett is the senior musical advisor for Six String Place and is widely acknowledged to be the one of the most versatile guitarists from the Detroit area. He recently placed second in the Fingerstyle Guitar magazine classical guitar composition competition sponsored by the Grammy winning classical guitarist Andrew York. He has also won many guitar competitions and is currently working on a guitar method book and a solo project. Paula Richardson is our lead piano and keyboard instructor. Paula has a masters degree in music theory as well as a bachelors degree in music composition and has been teaching piano for over twenty years. Paula has an extensive background in classical music as well as popular music and enjoys teaching students of all ages and musical abilities.
Steve Simonson is the lead drum and percussion instructor at Six String Place. He is an educator, audio engineer as well as a classically trained percussionist. He began playing drums at age 10 years old and started recording and performing professionally at 13. Steve's formal percussion education includes being a percussion major at MSU as well as performing in the MSU Marching Band and Orchestra. Currently Steve is teaching Audio Engineering at Lansing Community College, owns and operates his own audio engineering company, and plays drums for the Surf Rock tribute band "Donny and the Dorsals".
Kathy Hayes has been a passionate fan of vocal music since her very early years. As a youth, she toured Europe as a member of the elite Mona Shores A Capella Choir. Private voice in the college years and beyond were with Mary Lou Hayes, and Gordon Finlay, both accomplished students of the international opera star and professor of the University of Michigan, Eva Likova. Classically, Kathy sings with a golden, soprano voice. Pop, folk, country, rock, and gospel are also a large part of a versatile repertoire. Other performances include Soloist and Youth Camp Music Leader for Wayside Chapel Ministries, Mason, MI, band member for the Okemos Cornerstone Worship Team,Wedding Soloist, Williamston Annual Variety Show, Williamston March Musical Madness, among others. Currently Kathy is studying ukulele, teaching voice and recording an album of original compositions at the Six String Place recording studio in Williamston, MI.
